Inverter wiring : the connection that links panels, switchboard and grid

Wiring an inverter is not something you improvise: it links the panels (DC side), your switchboard (AC side) and the grid, in compliance with the standards and the Synergrid requirements. Poorly connected, it is dangerous and non-compliant. wendows carries out wiring to the highest standards and stays your single point of contact for warranty and after-sales service.

How an inverter is wired

The wiring follows a precise logic, from the roof to the grid. Here are the key steps our teams carry out in Belgium, in compliance with the standards and the grid operator's requirements.

DC wiring panels → inverter
DC side

Connecting the panels

The panel strings are connected to the inverter in direct current, with suitable connectors and a DC isolator. Careful wiring determines yield and safety.

Connecting to the switchboard

On the alternating current side, the inverter is connected to the switchboard via a dedicated breaker and the required protections. This is the interface with your home installation.

What matters in inverter wiring

Beyond the cable, it is safety and compliance that make for successful wiring. The technical benchmarks to know, applied by our teams.

Type DC + AC

An inverter's wiring has two sides: the direct current (DC) coming from the panels and the alternating current (AC) going to the switchboard and the grid. Each has its own protections and rules.

Power to be protectedkW

The rating of the protections (breakers, isolators, cables) is sized to the inverter's power. Under-sizing is dangerous; over-sizing, pointless.

Safety Earthing & protections

Earthing, residual-current protection and a possible surge arrester protect people and equipment. This is the core of compliant wiring, never an option.

Compliance Synergrid

The connection follows the Synergrid requirements and the declarations to the grid operator. wendows carries out the installation and handles the associated formalities.

Monitoring to be connected

The wiring includes connecting the monitoring (communication, possible production meter) so that tracking works from commissioning.

Commissioning tested

Once wired, the inverter is commissioned and tested: checking the protections, verifying the connection polarity and activation. Nothing is left to chance.

Wiring is not DIY: safety and compliance first

A poorly wired inverter is a danger and is non-compliant. Our teams carry out the DC and AC connection, the protections and the earthing to standards, handle the Synergrid formalities, then provide warranty and after-sales service directly.

Qualified electricians Wiring an inverter is a job for an electrician: our teams are qualified for DC and AC connection and the protections, to the highest standards.

Why is wiring an inverter not something you improvise?

The inverter sits at the crossroads of three worlds: the panels (direct current, sometimes high-voltage), your switchboard (alternating current) and the distribution grid. Wiring it means linking these three sides while respecting precise safety and compliance rules. A mistake can be as dangerous as it is illegal.

On the DC side, the panel strings reach the inverter via an isolator and suitable connectors. On the AC side, the inverter joins the switchboard via a dedicated breaker and the required protections. Add to this the earthing, the residual-current devices and, in some cases, a surge arrester. These devices are never optional.

"A well-chosen but poorly wired inverter remains dangerous: the compliance of the connection is not a detail, it is the foundation.

The grid connection, finally, follows the Synergrid requirements and is subject to declarations to the grid operator. This is where our role matters: our qualified electricians carry out the wiring to standards, handle the formalities and commission the inverter after checking the protections and the connection polarity.

Three sides to link cleanly. Panels (DC), switchboard (AC) and grid: the wiring links these three sides with the required protections and in compliance with the Synergrid requirements.

The cost of the wiring is generally included in the overall installation rather than billed on its own, because it depends on the configuration (type of inverter, distance to the switchboard, presence of a battery). How much does wiring an inverter cost?

The wiring is most often included in the overall installation, because it depends on the configuration. Here are starting benchmarks for connection carried out by our teams, subsidies and reduced VAT applied afterwards.

FAQ Inverter wiring

Your questions about wiring an inverter

Can you wire a solar inverter yourself?

It is neither recommended nor compliant: the wiring involves high-voltage direct current on the panel side and the grid connection, subject to the Synergrid requirements. It is the job of a qualified electrician, for the safety of people as much as for the compliance of the installation.

How is an inverter wired?

On the DC side, the panel strings reach the inverter via an isolator and suitable connectors. On the AC side, the inverter joins the switchboard via a dedicated breaker. Add to this the earthing and the residual-current devices. The whole is then connected to the grid according to the rules.

What is Synergrid compliance?

Synergrid issues the technical requirements for connecting a solar installation to the distribution grid in Belgium. The connection must comply with them and be subject to the required declarations to the grid operator. wendows carries out the installation and handles these formalities.

What protections are needed for an inverter?

At a minimum: a DC isolator on the panel side, a dedicated breaker and a residual-current device on the AC side, as well as earthing. In some cases, a surge arrester is added. These devices protect people and equipment — they are never optional.

Is the wiring different with a battery?

Yes. A hybrid inverter adds the battery connection to the diagram, with its own cabling and protections. It is one more reason to entrust the wiring to qualified electricians, who integrate the storage cleanly into the installation.

Is the wiring included in the installation?

Yes, most of the time. The inverter's connection is included in the complete installation rather than billed on its own, because it depends on the configuration. The detail is stated on your quote, with subsidies and 6% VAT deducted afterwards.
