The price factors

What makes the price of a lithium battery vary

Same chemistry, identical capacity: two quotes can differ by several thousand euros. Here are the six items that really weigh.

  • Chemistry: LFP, NMC or LTO

    Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is the versatile, cheapest-per-kWh and safest choice. NMC offers higher density but costs 15 to 25 % more. LTO, extremely durable (20 000+ cycles), is reserved for intensive use and remains markedly more expensive.

  • Usable capacity in kWh

    The per-kWh price decreases as capacity rises thanks to economies of scale per module. It is often more cost-effective to install 10 kWh at once than to add modules later.

  • Guaranteed number of cycles

    A 6 000-cycle warranty (LFP) is worth far more over time than a 3 000-cycle warranty (NMC). Compare the cost per kWh stored over the whole life of the battery, not just the initial purchase price.

  • Brand and build quality

    A top-tier manufacturer (BYD, Tesla, Pylontech, Toshiba) includes grade-A cells, a proven BMS (Battery Management System) and a solid manufacturer warranty. Generic brands are 20 to 40 % cheaper but the long-term risk is significant.

  • Warranty length and terms

    A 10-year warranty with capacity retention at 70 % (BYD, Tesla standard) is better than a hardware warranty with no retention clause. Check the invalidation conditions (temperature, charge rate).

  • Integration and inverter compatibility

    A battery compatible with your existing inverter (AC-coupled) avoids the replacement cost. An all-in-one hybrid system (inverter + battery) is more efficient but 900 to 1 800 € more expensive depending on the chosen model.

Lithium battery storage benefits from support that varies by region. Brussels directly grants storage coupled to PV; Wallonia offers an indirect benefit via green certificates; Flanders sometimes includes the battery in its renovation grant. Renolution grant — battery storage

up to 1 500 € for a lithium battery coupled to PV

The Brussels Region supports the installation of a lithium storage system linked to a photovoltaic installation via the Renolution programme. The amount can be adjusted according to your income and the size of the installation.

Indirect benefit via green certificates

Wallonia does not directly grant the lithium battery in 2026, but storage maximises your self-consumption, reduces surplus injection and adds value to your green certificates. The return is real even without direct support.

Your questions about the price of a lithium battery

How much does a lithium battery cost in Belgium in 2026?

The price of a fitted lithium battery depends on the chemistry: expect 600 to 800 €/kWh for LFP, 700 to 1 000 €/kWh for NMC and 1 000 to 1 500 €/kWh for LTO, with supply, fitting and connections included (incl. VAT).

What is the price difference between LFP, NMC and LTO?

LFP is the most affordable and most durable chemistry (4 000 to 6 000 cycles). NMC offers higher energy density for 15 to 25 % more, but ages faster in high heat (2 000 to 3 500 cycles). LTO, designed for intensive use, can exceed 20 000 cycles but remains far more expensive — rarely justified for a home.

Is LFP really the best choice for a home?

In the vast majority of residential cases, yes. LFP combines safety (no thermal runaway), high lifespan, wide compatibility and one of the lowest per-cycle costs on the market. NMC may be justified if space is very limited (higher density). LTO is reserved for ultra-intensive use.

Are there grants for a lithium battery in Belgium?

Brussels offers a Renolution grant of up to 1 500 € for lithium storage coupled to PV. Wallonia does not directly grant the battery in 2026, but storage optimises the production eligible for green certificates. In Flanders, some municipalities include storage in the Mijn VerbouwPremie.

Is VAT reduced for a lithium battery?

Yes, for the renovation of a home over 10 years old, VAT is 6 % instead of 21 %. This reduction applies to the whole invoice (supply + fitting). We check your eligibility from the very first contact.

Is my existing inverter compatible with a lithium battery?

It depends on the brand and the communication protocol (CAN bus, RS485). Most modern inverters (SMA, Fronius, Huawei, Solaredge) are compatible with LFP and NMC batteries via AC coupling. An all-in-one hybrid inverter is the most efficient solution for a new installation.
