Heat pump in new builds
Is a heat pump mandatory in a new build?
The regulations do not require a heat pump by name, but they do require the near-zero-energy level (NZEB) for any new build in Belgium. In practice, on a well-insulated new fabric, the heat pump is the simplest and most economical solution for reaching that level, especially when coupled with photovoltaics. It has become the default choice for new builds.
Do you need underfloor heating with a heat pump in a new build?
It is not mandatory, but it is the ideal pairing. Underfloor heating works at low temperature (30 to 35 °C), which lets the heat pump run at its best efficiency (high COP) and consume as little as possible. In a new build, the underfloor circuit is embedded in the slab with no rework cost: it is well worth doing from the outset.
At what point in the build should the heat pump be planned?
As early as possible, from the preliminary design. Sizing is done on the plans and the EPC study, and the underfloor heating must be fitted before the slab is poured. The builders’ openings, the electrical supply and the routing of the ventilation ducts are coordinated with the structural work. A heat pump planned late means compromises and avoidable extra costs.
Can the heat pump be coupled with photovoltaics and heat-recovery ventilation?
Yes, and that is the whole point of a new build: the system is designed as one. The photovoltaics feed part of the consumption of the heat pump and the hot water tank. The heat-recovery ventilation recovers heat from the extracted air, which further reduces the heating demand. The three systems complement each other to pull the EPC level towards near-zero energy.
Does the heat pump also handle domestic hot water in a new build?
Yes. We install a domestic hot water tank sized for your household, fed by the heat pump. In a new build, hot water production can also be prioritised during periods of high solar production, to maximise self-consumption. You have reliable hot water all year round with minimal electricity consumption.
