Your type of home, the recommended heat pump

The right choice depends first on three things: the space available for an outdoor unit, the insulation of the fabric and the emitters already in place (radiators or underfloor heating). Here are the main cases we come across in Belgium.

Apartment & narrow terraced house

Older home to renovate

A home over ten years old, often gas- or oil-heated with radiators: the air-to-water heat pump replaces the boiler and benefits from 6% VAT and the grant. The insulation and the emitters dictate the flow temperature. → "Heat pump in renovations" page.

New build & large villa

  1. What is your type of home?

    Apartment, terraced, detached, villa or farmhouse: the space available for the outdoor unit and the neighbour constraints already rule out certain technologies.

  2. New or old, well insulated or not?

    A recent, insulated fabric allows a very efficient low-temperature air-to-water unit. An older home means looking first at the insulation and the emitters in place.

  3. Radiators or underfloor heating?

    Underfloor heating favours low-temperature operation at the best COP. With old radiators, we check whether a high-temperature heat pump or add-ons are needed.

The criterion that decides

Insulation and emitters before the heat-pump type

Even before comparing technologies, two factors determine the real efficiency: the quality of the insulation and the flow temperature your emitters demand. Underfloor heating in an insulated home gets the best out of an air-to-water unit; old radiators in a leaky fabric require a high-temperature heat pump or works first. It is this diagnosis, not the type of home alone, that guides the choice.

  • Good insulation + underfloor heating = low-temperature air-to-water, maximum COP
  • Old radiators = check high temperature or insulation first

Which heat pump for an apartment?

In an apartment, space and co-ownership are the first constraints. We most often steer towards an air-to-air heat pump (split or multi-split), discreet and without major works, or towards a compact air-to-water unit if a heating circuit exists. Which heat pump for an older home in renovation?

For a home over ten years old heated by gas or oil, the air-to-water heat pump is the most common solution: it replaces the boiler, reuses the radiators or underfloor heating and qualifies for the regional grant and 6% VAT. Which heat pump for a new build or a large villa?

A new home is well insulated and often fitted with underfloor heating: it is ideal ground for a low-temperature air-to-water unit with a high COP. Is the type of home enough to choose the heat pump?

No. The type of home rules out certain options (space for the outdoor unit, co-ownership), but the final choice depends on the insulation and the emitters. Two identical detached houses can call for different heat pumps depending on whether they have underfloor heating or old radiators. That is why the thermal assessment remains the decisive step.
