The right window material, city by city

PVC remains the most common choice for its value for money and minimal upkeep. Aluminium, being more rigid, allows slim profiles and very large glazed bays — ideal for contemporary extensions. Wood brings warmth and authenticity, perfect for heritage renovation, in exchange for regular maintenance. Mostly on the material: count roughly €450 to €1,100 per window in PVC, €750 to €1,800 in aluminium and €1,100 to €2,000 in wood, installation included. The city plays a marginal role (site access, listed façade), but it’s mainly your region that determines the grants: housing grant and 6% VAT in Wallonia, Renolution grants in Brussels. Yes, it’s actually common. You often see aluminium for the large ground-floor bays and PVC upstairs to keep the budget in check, or wood on the street side (heritage) and PVC on the garden side. Wood-aluminium even combines wood on the inside with aluminium on the outside. We quote each combination at the survey.

On a listed façade or in a protected zone, the municipality and the Heritage Directorate often require a material and profiles close to the original — usually wood, sometimes a PVC or a coated wood-aluminium reproducing the period look. We know these constraints: give us your address and we’ll adapt the material and put together the file.

Properly installed, all three materials last several decades. PVC and aluminium require very little maintenance (regular cleaning is enough); aluminium copes particularly well with large dimensions and the weather. Wood offers the longest lifespan if it’s maintained (stain or paint every few years). The choice therefore comes down as much to the upkeep you accept as to raw longevity.
