Wood windows: the noble material for your everyday openings

Tilt-and-turn and side-hung wood windows combine natural insulation, visual warmth and respect for the building. Oak, meranti or laminated pine depending on the project: the only material that can be restored rather than replaced, ideal for a home with character or a listed renovation.

What a wood window is really worth

The benchmarks that matter for a wood window fitted by our teams, on an everyday opening. Concrete figures, not marketing.

  • Thermal insulation
    Uf 1.3–1.6 W/m²K

Wood insulates naturally, with no strip or air chamber: its low conductivity makes it one of the best frame performers. Paired with double or triple glazing, the whole unit (Uw) reaches the level of a high-performance renovation.

  • Species available
    Oak · meranti · pine

Oak for nobility and hardness, meranti (a tropical wood) for its stability against moisture, laminated pine for an excellent price/stability ratio. We choose the species based on the exposure and budget of the window.

  • Glazing bars & muntins
    Bespoke

Wood works like no other material: windows with glazing bars, bonded or integrated muntins, mouldings and original profiles reproduced exactly. Essential to respect an old or listed building.

  • Durability
    40 years +

A well-maintained wood window easily passes 40 years, and above all it can be restored: you sand, fill and re-stain rather than replace. An advantage neither PVC nor aluminium offers.

  • Finishes
    Stain or paint

Clear or tinted stain that lets the grain show through, or opaque paint in a microporous finish in any RAL shade. We adapt the protection system to each window’s exposure.

  • Maintenance
    8–12 year cycle

Contrary to popular belief, maintenance is spaced out: a refresh of stain or paint every 8 to 12 years depending on exposure. Modern microporous finishes have greatly extended this cycle.

* Indicative values for a standard-range wood window. Exact performance depends on the species, glazing and dimensions — confirmed at the survey.

Pros & limits of the wood window

No material is perfect for every opening. Here, honestly, is where the wood window excels and where it’s better to look elsewhere.

Where it excels

  • Natural insulationWood insulates without tricks: one of the best frame performers, with no thermal break.
  • The material of old buildingsGlazing bars, muntins and original profiles reproduced — the only choice accepted in a listed monument.
  • Restored instead of thrown awayYou sand and re-stain a wood window; you replace a PVC or aluminium one.
  • Warmth and authenticityThe grain of wood brings a visual warmth no other material truly imitates.

What to keep in mind

  • Periodic maintenanceA re-stain or repaint every 8 to 12 years, against next to nothing for PVC or aluminium.
  • Pricier than PVCWood and labour cost more: count on 30 to 50% above PVC.
  • Sensitive to exposureA full-south window or one very exposed to rain will need a tighter maintenance cycle.
  • Quality varies by speciesCheap, poorly treated pine ages badly: the species and finish make all the difference over time.

Is the wood window right for you?

It comes into its own whenever you want character, natural insulation or respect for an existing building. A few cases where it shines:

  • Home with character

    Home with character

On an old facade, the wood window extends the style: mouldings, muntins and stained shades that match the building rather than betray it.

  • Renovation & listed monument

    Renovation & listed monument

In a protected zone or on a listed monument, wood is often the only material allowed. We reproduce the original profiles exactly, window by window.

  • Comfort & ecology

    Comfort & ecology

For those who want a renewable material, natural insulation and the warmth of wood inside, with no compromise on performance.

No appetite for maintenance, or need large surfaces?

For the warmth of wood inside with no outdoor upkeep, look at wood-aluminium. And for the best insulation/price ratio on everyday openings, the PVC window stays unbeatable.

Wood window FAQ

Your questions about wood windows

Does a wood window need a lot of maintenance? +

Far less than it used to. Modern microporous finishes have stretched the cycle: you refresh the stain or paint every 8 to 12 years depending on exposure. A full-south window or one badly battered by rain will need slightly tighter upkeep, but we’re a long way from the yearly repaint of old.

Which wood species should I choose for a window? +

Oak for nobility and hardness, meranti (a tropical wood) for its great stability against moisture, laminated pine for an excellent price/stability ratio. We choose based on the window’s exposure and budget: a more stable wood is justified on the most exposed facades.

Does wood insulate as well as PVC or aluminium? +

Yes, and even better than aluminium. Wood has low thermal conductivity: it insulates naturally with no thermal break or air chamber. Its frame performance is among the best, neck and neck with PVC. Paired with the right glazing, the unit reaches the level of a high-performance renovation.

Can wood windows be fitted on a listed house? +

It’s often the only material allowed. In a protected zone or on a listed monument, the authorities generally require wood and the retention of the original profiles. We reproduce glazing bars, muntins and mouldings exactly, with high-performance double glazing built in without betraying the look.

Can an old wood window be restored rather than replaced? +

It’s one of the great strengths of wood: depending on the condition, you sand, fill, replace the glazing and re-stain rather than throw everything out. On old or listed buildings, this restoration preserves the original joinery while improving insulation. We assess window by window what can be salvaged.

Which grants for wood windows? +

Grants depend on the performance achieved (Uw value), not the material. A high-performance wood window qualifies, depending on your region and income, for a renovation grant and 6% VAT for homes over ten years old. We handle the paperwork for you.
