Tilt-and-turn window: ventilate safely, open up wide

The most fitted type of opening in Belgium, and for good reason. In tilt position, the window opens slightly at the top to ventilate safely (children, rain, security). In turn position, it opens fully for maximum fresh air or easy cleaning. A standard that has proven itself for decades.

What a tilt-and-turn is really worth

The numbers that matter for a quality tilt-and-turn, fitted by our teams. Concrete benchmarks, not marketing.

  • Dual opening
    2 positions

In tilt mode, the sash tips at the top by ~10 cm: continuous ventilation, rain kept out, child safety assured. In turn mode, it swings 90° for fresh air or cleaning the panes.

  • Sealing
    Multi-point

Multi-point hardware compresses the gasket around the entire sash perimeter. The result: watertightness and windtightness superior to a slider or a side-hung casement.

  • Thermal insulation
    Uw 0.8–1.3 W/m²K

Thanks to gasket compression, the tilt-and-turn is the most thermally sealed type of opening. With good glazing, the whole unit drops very low.

  • Acoustic insulation
    up to 45 dB

The reinforced sealing also benefits acoustics. With asymmetric acoustic glazing, the reduction reaches 40 to 45 dB.

  • Security
    Misoperation-proof

The hardware prevents simultaneous tilt + turn opening. In tilt position, the opening is too narrow for an intrusion.

  • Maintenance
    Simple

The hinges adjust with a screwdriver. The hardware is lubricated once a year. No heavy maintenance whatever the frame material.

* Indicative values for standard-range tilt-and-turns. Exact performance depends on the material, the glazing and the dimensions — confirmed at the site survey.

Pros & cons of the tilt-and-turn

The tilt-and-turn is the standard, but it isn’t the only type of opening. Here’s when it excels and when a slider or fixed window suits better.

Where it excels

  • Safe ventilationIn tilt position, the window airs out with no risk to children and keeps the rain out.
  • Maximum sealingMulti-point compression offers the best sealing of any type of opening.
  • The best value for moneyIt’s the most common type of opening: prices are highly competitive.
  • Every material availablePVC, aluminium, wood, wood-alu: the tilt-and-turn exists in every range.

What you should know

  • Indoor swingIn turn position, the sash swings into the room — furniture and curtains to clear.
  • Limited at very large widthsBeyond ~1.4 m wide, the sash gets heavy; for large bays, the slider takes over.
  • No direct terrace accessFor passage to the outside, prefer a French door or a slider.
  • Hardware under strainThe hinges and the espagnolette work hard — an occasional adjustment may be needed over the years.

Tilt-and-turn FAQ

Your questions about the tilt-and-turn

What exactly is the tilt position? +

The sash tips at the top by about 10 cm, held by side stays. Air circulates, rain is kept out and the opening is too narrow to pass through — ideal for ventilating safely, even when you’re away.

Is the tilt-and-turn safe for children? +

Yes. In tilt position, the opening is too narrow for a child to pass through. A misoperation safeguard prevents simultaneous tilt and turn opening. It’s the type of opening recommended for upper floors and children’s bedrooms.

Can a tilt-and-turn be left open at night? +

In tilt position, yes. The rain is kept out by the top of the sash and the opening is secure. Many Belgians ventilate the bedroom at night this way.

Does the hardware need adjusting over time? +

A small adjustment of the hinges and the espagnolette may be needed after a few years. It’s simple, with no dismantling, and our technicians do it if needed during a service.

How wide can a tilt-and-turn be? +

Up to about 1.2 to 1.4 m in a single sash. Beyond that, the sash weight puts too much strain on the hardware. For wider openings, we move to two sashes or a slider.

What grants are available for tilt-and-turns? +

Grants depend on performance (Uw coefficient), not on the type of opening. A high-performance tilt-and-turn qualifies for the renovation grant and the 6% VAT for homes over ten years old.
