Solar panel lifespan: how many years?

A solar panel produces electricity well beyond its payback — often twenty-five to thirty years, or even more. Here is the real lifespan of an installation, what the guarantees actually cover and how to make the whole thing last.

Solar panel lifespan: how many years?

Installing solar panels means betting on the long term: production pays back the investment in a few years, then continues for free for decades. But you still need to know how long “decades” really means, and what the guarantees actually cover. This guide sorts out the lifespan of the panels, of the inverter and of the batteries — without hollow promises, with concrete figures.

How long does a solar panel last?

A quality photovoltaic panel produces electricity for 25 to 30 years, and very often beyond. There is no “expiry date”: a panel does not break down overnight. It keeps working, simply with an output that declines very slowly. Installations put up in the 1980s and 1990s are still producing today — the best proof of longevity you could ask for.

25-30 years

This is the reference lifespan of a quality solar panel installed by the book. Many installations exceed this range; the performance guarantee, for its part, runs up to 25 or 30 years.

This robustness comes from the panel’s simplicity: no moving parts, no motor, no mechanical wear. Tempered glass, silicon cells and an aluminium frame sealed together, exposed to sun and rain. It is precisely because it does not “work” mechanically that it ages so well.

What is annual degradation?

A panel does not keep 100 % of its power all its life: it loses a little output each year. This is what is called annual degradation. For a recent panel, it runs at around 0.5 % per year — sometimes less on high-end models.

The calculation is simple to picture: with 0.5 % loss per year, a panel still produces around 85 to 90 % of its original power after 25 years. In other words, a 400 Wp panel will still deliver the equivalent of 340 to 360 Wp after a quarter of a century. The drop is real, but gentle and predictable — it never calls the value of the installation into question.

Worth remembering The first year counts separately

Most panels undergo a slight, more marked initial drop in the first year (often 1 to 2 %), linked to the stabilisation of the cells, before settling back into the slow rhythm of 0.5 % per year. This is normal and already built into the manufacturers’ guarantee curves.

Understanding the guarantees: product, performance, inverter

This is where many quotes look alike on the surface but differ in reality. Three guarantees coexist, and they must be read separately.

The product guarantee

It covers manufacturing defects in the panel itself: delamination, cell defect, infiltration. Depending on the brands, it ranges from 12 to 25 years. Premium manufacturers today offer 25 years of product guarantee — a strong signal of the confidence they place in their equipment.

The performance guarantee

Distinct from the previous one, it guarantees a minimum output level over time. A manufacturer commits, for example, to the panel still delivering at least 85 or 90 % of its power after 25 or 30 years. It is the one that puts the acceptable degradation in black and white.

The inverter guarantee

The inverter, for its part, has a shorter guarantee: generally 8 to 12 years, sometimes extendable for a supplement. This makes sense, because it is the part that works the hardest.

On a solar quote, never read “25-year guarantee” without asking: a guarantee of what, the panel or its performance? The two do not have the same scope.

The inverter and the battery age differently

If the panels are the marathon runners of the installation, the inverter is its sprinter. It is an electronic device running permanently as soon as there is sun, and it heats up. The result: you generally need to plan a replacement after 10 to 15 years, that is once or twice over the life of the panels. It is an expense to factor into any honest profitability calculation — and a good starting point for choosing the right inverter from the outset.

The storage battery, when there is one, follows yet another logic: its lifespan is measured in charge/discharge cycles, not just in years. A modern domestic lithium battery typically lasts 6,000 to 10,000 cycles, that is about 10 to 15 years of daily use, then retaining a reduced capacity (often 70 to 80 % guaranteed at end of guarantee). Here too, read the guarantee in cycles and in years: it is the more restrictive of the two that applies.

What wears out an installation (and what does not)

Good news first: the sun, the rain, the hail and the frost do not wear out a properly certified panel — it is designed and tested to take them. What really weighs on longevity lies elsewhere:

  • The quality of the installation. A poorly made fixing, exposed wiring or a badly ventilated panel fatigue the whole more quickly than the sun.
  • Excessive heat. A panel that is too hot produces less and ages a little faster; good ventilation under the panels counts.
  • An undersized inverter or one installed in an overheated room, which reduces its own life expectancy.
  • The lack of monitoring. An undetected micro-fault can nibble away at production for months without anyone noticing.

Conversely, partial shading, light dust or a few leaves “break” nothing: they temporarily reduce production, without damaging the equipment.

How to extend the lifespan of your installation

Longevity is not just decided at purchase: it is maintained. A few habits are enough to get the most out of the three promised decades.

  • Active monitoring. Following production via the inverter’s app lets you spot an abnormal drop immediately and act before it becomes costly.
  • Choosing brand equipment. A recognised panel and inverter, with a solid manufacturer behind the guarantee, is the assurance of a spare part and after-sales service in ten or fifteen years.
  • Anticipating the inverter replacement. Planning it from the start avoids the nasty surprise and lets you seize the right moment to upgrade.

Once at the end of the guarantee, your panels do not stop: they keep producing, simply with a reduced output. You can keep them as long as they hold, or take the opportunity to replace the whole set with a more efficient generation. And the day they go into retirement, they are recycled: glass, aluminium and silicon are recovered through dedicated channels, financed by the eco-contribution paid at purchase. Your old panels go back through your installer or an approved collection point — not through the bin.
